Katherine Cookson
“Worlds within worlds.” That world may be dark and gloomy or it may be light and fresh as it reflects the natural rhythm of life. It will either be an emotional response to something that I have experienced or it may reflect a collective mood that hangs in the air.
I am curious. I apply the paint to the surface and the story begins to develop. The biggest source for my paintings comes directly from Nature. I am keenly interested in how things age and are covered up and then discovered again, hinting at our own mortality. I believe we are all responsible for our personal discrimination and our ruthless treatment of the planet.
I continue to inquire. Is the process flowing smoothly or do I need to change or improve the conversation between the elements of the piece: the color, the shapes, the lines, the texture? I scratch and excavate as I search for what has been buried.
In my paintings, there is wounding and healing, hope and despair, the beautiful and the ugly.
