Merith Cosden
I am inspired by varied aspects of the natural environment, from the colors, grace, and movement of seaweed, tidepools, and waves; to the rugged structure and flora of the desert; from the majesty and earth tones of cliffs to the deep secret hold of forests. I layer acrylic paint and mixed media to create textural abstract images inspired by my experiences in nature. I have been influenced largely by the beauty of New Mexico, Colorado, and California where I have lived most of my life. Although some of my paintings have representational elements, it is because, rather than reproduce their appearance, I am trying to provide an emotional interpretation of an encounter with that environment. My paintings are known for their texture and suggestion of movement and tend to be smaller canvases (12” x 12” or 20” x 20”).
