Eugene Galles

Everything around us is a sculpture. Architecture, interior design, and the objects we cherish are all composites of the basic shapes found in nature. When I glance at a garden or a building, I reduce what I see into squares, rectangles, and triangles. What if we could express an emotion or thought using the same principle? This question is the basis for my sculpture. The basic shapes I use become a language, punctuated by color, texture, and the way light bounces off a surface. When I see a stone in its raw form, rather than think about what object, animal, or person I can create, I think about what I can express with the permission of the stone's natural beauty. Through a series of drawings, I develop a plan. Stone is extremely unpredictable and as you uncover the history of the stone plans change. From start to finish, every decision you make regarding the treatment of the stone will affect your result. The challenge is to dance around those faults delicately so that you remain true to your original idea.
