Joyce Wilson

II was blessed with a childhood full of chaos, joy and seemingly simple, but profound creativity…there was always baking, making, sewing, hammering and building. I knew from early childhood that I would be an artist.

I became a photographer out of necessity, but the art evolved out of experience and a constant nagging at the core of my being that makes me restless, driven and inquisitive. After a long and successful career as a professional photographer in Indianapolis, Indiana, I moved to Santa Barbara in l996 and served on the faculty at Brooks Institute of Photography until 2016. Retirement has given me the time and energy to return to my early training and my roots…PAINTING, and I’ve found joy in experimenting and mastering new mediums. Whether photographing or painting, I work intuitively, blending old world and contemporary technology using the camera as a sketchbook for the art that unfolds.

I am fascinated with light, shadows, shapes and texture, and look for the mystery and abstraction in the ordinary.
