Kathi Scarminach

Kathi Scarminach is a visual storyteller. The foundational principles of her work are the power of art to inspire, heal, and connect us to one another. Abstract art speaks a universal language that allows her to release personal and intimate portraiture. Each painting illustrates a story within her, fleeting or otherwise, a tale that begs to be unveiled and heard. She invites the viewer to observe themselves in her painting, whether with a nervous glance back, an anxious twist of a foot, or in the riotous hues and spontaneous design of the non-representational. The protagonist may be the solitary female figure, several struggling souls, or the cacophony of colorful self-expression. For each image, her journey to bring them to light is the same. She begins with bold haphazard colors and intuitive mark-making on panel that allows for its unfolding in fits and starts and long meandering passes of paint until the final chapter emerges.

Kathi donates the proceeds of her artwork to The Thriving Initiative at UCSB. There she facilitates a visual journal workshop where participants combine art and writing to retreat and take a deep dive into the world of self-exploration and self nurturance.
