Mary Dee Thompson

I have been interested in art for most of my life and have been creating it since the 1970s. I create both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional art. Each presents unique challenges and satisfactions.

My acrylic paintings reflect an ongoing exploration of color, line, and form. I filter the natural world through an abstractionist lens. Sometimes that world is somewhat literal, sometimes grounded only in my imagination. I am drawn to the interaction of bright colors and the relationship between shapes

My bronze sculptures reflect my fascination with the human form – male and female, I delight in exploring sculptural possibilities which transcend a literal presentation. Early work was heavily influenced by Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. More recent work is influenced by Giacometti but expresses my own personal vision - one that is whimsical, imaginative, and feminine.

I am active in the Santa Barbara art community. I am a member of AAC and the Santa Barbara Art Association, a member artist at 10 West Gallery, and a studio artist at the La Cumbre Center for Creative Arts. I regularly show at the Carpinteria Art Center and have shown at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art and nationally in several juried exhibitions.
