John De Herrera

I began as an artist as most do, drawing and painting as a child. When it comes to art, in general, humans want to be temporarily arrested by something that’s floating and glowing, and that’s become the criteria for my work — it must float and it must glow. I like to use traditional materials in nontraditional ways, and, over the past five years, work has narrowed in focus to color fields and semi-autonomous abstractions. I’ve had my studio/gallery in Santa Barbara’s Funk Zone for over a decade and I feel grateful to have carried on here for that time. As a famous painter once said, “A good piece of art is equivalent to a good deed.” So, if I’m creating things people are happy to hang in their home — then all right — let’s see how long we can do it.
