“Don’t be seduced into thinking that that which does not make a profit is without value.” — Arthur Miller
“Painting, for me, when it really ‘happens,’ is as miraculous as any natural phenomenon—as say, a lettuce leaf.” — Elaine De Kooning
For me, making art means tapping into the clear, vibrating energies inside and all around while being mindful of the curious roles of intention and persistence, chance and the unconscious. I love the interplay of planning, improvisation and technical skill involved in printmaking, painting, and drawing. Starting with a provocative word, image or concept, I can experiment and observe how the interactions of shapes, colors, textures and space communicate various meanings and moods. Although the topics and themes I address may be serious, spontaneity and playfulness permeate my process. I aim to involve viewers in musings about Life’s Big Questions by creating intriguing visual events.
Among my early and on-going influences are the Color Field painters (Helen Frankenthaler, Jules Olitsky, Kenneth Noland, Morris Louis, Sam Gilliam). Kasimir Malevich, Josef Albers, Sonia Delaunay, Ellsworth Kelly, Alma Thomas, Ed Ruscha, and Lawrence Weiner are artists that I revisit often. Working in art museums for over thirty years nourished my visual brain.
